The empty hand of innocence

Libertad (Sin Foco)
Margarita Paksa
1967

Margarita Paksa is an artist whose work really inspires me. She is from Buenos Aires and worked with labor unions and became a community organizer in slums, during a time when military dictatorship threatened any freedom artists had left. Her work effectively serves as art as activism and the influence of her personal experiences in social justice is clearly evident.

I find this piece extremely relevant for us today, considering the Johannes Mehserle trial. It may feel too familiar and uncomfortable, and it is a reminder that there is no hierarchy of oppression. Every community and group that fight for liberation and equal rights always find common ground amongst each other because we are up against the same forces. All I feel I have energy left to say is that we still want justice for Oscar Grant.
